Virginia's Choice
ABOUT THIS PATTERN:
Historically “choice” patterns are titled to note favor by their designer and feature the designer’s name. Virginia’s Choice is a four-patch quilt block, created through the joining of four identical blocks at their center. This forms a “x” to the pattern, making Virginia’s Choice also a crossroads quilt block.
Like many quilt blocks, this one has gained several names on its journey across regions and communities. Each imbues the pattern with different visions for its meaning, creating room for interpretation and purpose.
When I began researching patterns for this project, I was struck by the beauty of this design with its cloverleaf center that alternates between heart shapes and single tears and its title. Virginia is my mother’s name. However “choice” carries a very different and specific connotation for me. As a second wave feminist, my mother spent the first chapter of her life without access to legal safe abortion. My sister and I were born a few years after women were granted the protections of Row v. Wade. We had no control over this- but my mother did. Our bond has been deepened by the thought and choice she put into having us, furthering our understanding of being wanted and loved from the beginning.
