Century of Progress

ABOUT THIS PATTERN:

Century of Progress is a square inside a square pattern, featuring four squares shifting 45 degrees and decreasing in size from the outer edge to the center. Lines intersect at the center of the block, creating a “x”, making Century of Progress also a crossroads pattern. If you look closely, four arrows appear pointing to the center of the quilt block, creating a sense of momentum and direction within this geometric pattern.

While the designer and exact date of this pattern are unknown, it is safe to assume Century of Progress quilt block originated around 1933, the same year as the Chicago Worlds Fair, otherwise known as the Century of Progress International Exhibition. The city’s centennial celebration inspired many imaginative works predicting innovations for the century ahead.

The Century of Progress pattern is rooted in the values of American innovation pointing to the future.
