Monkey Wrench
ABOUT THIS PATTERN:
First published in 1884, the Monkey Wrench quilt block pattern’s origin has been traced to the mid 1850’s. It is believed to have earned its name, like many patterns in this era, due to its resemblance to an essential utilitarian object needed for fixing and mending; in this case an adjustable wrench.
As a figure of speech however, a monkey wrench is something one figuratively throws into a process to deliberately to disrupt it. The Women’s March of 2017, for example, threw a monkey wrench into the inaugural celebratory mood of our forty-fifth president. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony of sexual assault threw a monkey wrench into Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings. A whistle blower’s testimony threw a monkey wrench into Donald Trump’s extortion of the Ukraine for personal gain leading to his impeachment.
The Monkey Wrench is both a symbol of utility and resistance.
