Courthouse Steps
ABOUT THIS PATTERN:
The Courthouse Steps quilt block is a defining pattern of the Civil War era. As one of several variations of the Log Cabin quilt block, the Courthouse Steps continued to gain popularity and momentum in the years following the passage of the 13th Amendment.
As is the case with several patterns in Women’s Work, Courthouse Steps was designed, sewn and shared by American women generations before they could vote. Quilt patterns hold a unique significance as a visual language created by and often only understood by other women. It was around the sewing table women organized.
I offer Courthouse Steps in Women's Work as a pattern emblematic of our continued quest for a fair and just democracy.
