ABOUT THIS PATTERN:

Originating during the Art Deco movement, Sunrise is a fan quilt block featuring tapered quadrennials radiating from one corner.

Like many quilt blocks, this one has taken on variations of design during its journey across regions and communities. Each design shift imbues the pattern with different meanings, creating room for interpretation and purpose.

During a trip to the south, a good friend of mine told me a story that inspired me to bring Sunrise in as part of the line. I knew her father had passed away when she was a little girl, but we hadn’t talked about how her family moved forward during the period that followed.

Sitting on the beach in the midday sun she told me about how, for a time, her mother would pack a picnic basket before dawn and drive to them beach. There they would sit and eat breakfast while watching the sunrise. Together they listened to the sound of the waves and the wind and birds. It was as if for a short while the beach was theirs as no one else was out so early, and everything was possible. It remains her favorite time to be on the beach.

This story arrived on the eve of the second Women’s March, following my first year living in the “new normal/not normal” American political landscape. Like many activists, I was beginning to fatigue. Her story rekindled my fondness for mornings, and my wonderment for a new day’s promise. Sunrise is a pattern for fresh starts and new beginnings.
